Twin Robots no longer for sale on PC

Hi.

It’s with great sorrow that I have decided to stop selling Twin Robots on PC, due to the new GDPR law that goes into effect May 25, 2018. Don’t take me wrong, I love how this new law gives power back to the people about its own data, but adapting Twin Robots to this new regulation would require:

  1. Removing gameplay analytics: These are stats about where players die, how long they stay on each level, etc.
  2. Removing Unity Hardware analytics: These registered hardware info so the Unity team could gather insight about where to optimize their engine, for example. The thing is, the free version of the Unity engine does not allow to disable this data gathering. You have to subscribe on their $35/month plan to be able to do that… with a minimum 12 month stay.
  3. Removing online leaderboards: I used my own server for this, and since it registered your username along your score, it could potentially be considered personal data under the new GDPR law. Specially when considering that the default username when submitting a score is your Steam username, which uniquely identifies you.
  4. Removing Steam integration: when playing from inside the Steam client, the game sends & receives personal data like your Steam username, so that’s probably a no-no under the GDPR too.

If I don’t remove all this, I’d have to provide a means for the player (you) to access, revoke or modify any of this data.

After that, I’d have to build, test & upload all 3 versions (Win, Mac, Linux).

I was going to do it, I even purchased the Unity subscription plan, but honestly… it’s not worth it. It doesn’t make any financial sense, the game has been for sale since 2015 and it sold pretty bad. So I can’t keep pouring time & energy on it.

I’m a single developer with a normal day job, so I prefer to put my scarce resources (time, effort, money) towards building a new game where all these requirements will be met from the start.

Thanks for reading, and sorry if this causes you any trouble. If that’s so, please let me know and we’ll talk about it, I can probably help.

Oh btw, for existing players: the game should continue working as usual, though the leaderboards won’t work anymore so you’ll see a “Loading…” message in there that never clears (the leaderboards on my server have been removed). Sorry for that inconvenience.

Have a nice day,
Pablo

Twin Robots – Speedrun contest!

Hi,

Hope you are all having fun playing Twin Robots!

I thought it would be cool to make some kind of contest to reward you for playing this game, and a 3D printed figurine of one of the robots came up as a nice prize! Some time ago I made one for myself, I hand painted it and it’s currently sitting on my desk:

My little robot

Robot #1 – This one is mine!

So, I already got a new one 3D printed, and it’s still pure white. It’s about 9,7 cm / 3,8 inches tall:

New robot - Still white!

Robot #2 – This one can be yours!

If you win, you’ll get to choose between the black or the white version of the robot and I’ll hand paint it myself. I can also leave it as is in case you want to paint it. International shipping is on me too, except for customs / border charges if any.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/374230

What’s new on the Steam version? Well…
- Added background music
- Music & sound effects volume can be adjusted ingame
- Added steamworks support (achievements)
- Player name uses your Steam username by default. If you enter any other name once, then that’s the one that will be used by default from then on.
- Graphic enhancements (depth of field, distance fog, vsync option)
- Background is now lighter when lights go off, so the black bot can be seen better.
- More gamepads supported!
- Vibration support on Windows via XInput
- You no longer need 2 gamepads to unlock multiplayer mode: you can play local coop using a keyboard + 1 gamepad
- Added a game manual

I wanted to include the Android version as a free DLC but Valve refused to distribute an apk, so if you want it just get in touch and we’ll find a way ;)

Twin Robots – Now on Shield & AndroidTV

Do you have a Nvidia SHIELD? Are you planning to buy an AndroidTV device? Well then you should know that Twin Robots has just been released on both platforms! :)

The SHIELD, thanks to its Tegra 4 GPU, is capable of running the game at 60fps! This provides a smoother gameplay experience, and its great gamepad helps a lot too. All in all, this is now one of my favourite platforms where to enjoy the game. It will show up on TegraZone soon, but meanwhile you can grab it directly from Google Play.

AndroidTV has just been unveiled at Google I/O, and these little robots were so excited that jumped on board as soon as they heard about it. So, they will be waiting for you as soon as you get your new & shiny AndroidTV device. Just search for Twin Robots on the store!

Twin Robots is everywhere!

The day has finally come: Twin Robots is now available on Windows, Mac, Linux & Android.

Have a look at the game page here and choose your preferred platform!

It’s been a loooong way to get here but here it is at last. I’m very proud of the final result, and of course this wouldn’t have been possible at all without the awesome-sauce of Unity’s multiplatform capabilities. It’s just crazy how many different platforms you can target using almost the same codebase… and I’m not even targeting all the supported ones! If you are a gamedev you sure have heard about it, but just in the case you’ve been trapped in a cage for years and don’t know what I’m talking about, do yourself a favour and have a look at Unity’s website.

So, now that desktop & mobile versions of the game are ready… what comes next? Well, these two little robots are going to make a jump and have some fun on the PSVita, so that should be the next target where they’ll be running on!
